Abstract
Pediatric dysphagia and pediatric feeding disorders (PFD) are relatively common diagnoses seen in childhood, particularly in children who suffer from additional comorbidities. These disorders result from various factors, including health, neurological status, anatomy, behavior, nutrition, and respiratory status (Cerchiari et al., 2023). Due to their multifaceted nature, intervention often requires collaboration between trained professionals, such as Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Occupational Therapists (OTs). While collaboration seems intuitive for these multifactorial disorders, studies suggest it's not always implemented. This can lead to challenges in balancing individual roles with a collaborative approach, all while respecting professional scopes of practice (Spellman, 2019). This qualitative study investigated SLPs' experiences collaborating with OTs in managing PFD and dysphagia. Interviews with experienced SLPs revealed the potential benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration, such as enhanced learning and more holistic treatment plans for children. However, the study also identified barriers like limited communication, administrative hurdles, and a lack of awareness regarding each profession's scope of practice. Participants discussed positive and negative aspects impacting their assessment and treatment processes. They also hypothesized potential solutions to overcome the identified barriers. These solutions included improved education for therapists on interprofessional practice and incorporating collaboration into graduate programs.
