Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine what modality (in-person or online via zoom) is more efficient for improving fluency using a repetition technique. The research followed a quasi-experimental design that attempted to describe speech fluency while learning short foreign language sentences using a repetition task. Former studies have described both modalities, in-person and online, as beneficial. Other studies have described that using a repetition technique is beneficial in improving fluency in individuals. A total of 24 monolingual English speakers participated in this study, and were divided into two groups, in-person and online. Participants learned and produced five polish sentences while being audio recorded. Each sentence was repeated 10 times, then analyzed through the software Praat. Data analysis showed that there was an overall increase in fluency for both the in-person and online groups. This study suggests that repetition tasks make a positive effect on increasing fluency and both modalities (in-person and online) are beneficial to use for speech therapy.
