Abstract
The Hispanic population in the United States has experienced remarkable growth, approximately 19.1% of the total population and contributing an estimated $2.7 trillion annually to the economy. Despite these significant contributions, Hispanic students encounter substantial educational challenges, particularly within specialized fields such as Communication Sciences and Disorders (COMDIS). This study examines the multifaceted barriers Hispanic students face in COMDIS programs, focusing on language, academic, financial, and cultural barriers while comparing these experiences to those of their non-Hispanic peers. To investigate these issues, an online survey was administered to 46 participants using the Qualtrics platform. The findings indicate that, although both groups report similar academic pressures, Hispanic students experience heightened stress levels, reduced comfort in seeking faculty support, and significant financial constraints that limit their engagement in extracurricular activities. While language barriers were less pronounced than anticipated, issues related to feelings of exclusion and the representation of cultural identity emerged as critical concerns for Hispanic students. This study underscores the urgent need for educational institutions to implement culturally responsive interventions, and support systems specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by Hispanic students. By effectively addressing these barriers, institutions can promote inclusivity and enhance educational outcomes in COMDIS programs, ultimately improving the representation of Hispanic professionals within the field. These efforts are essential not only for fostering a more equitable educational environment, but also for ensuring that the perspectives and contributions of Hispanic individuals are fully reflected within the COMDIS (Communication Sciences and Disorders) field.
