Abstract
Utilizing a Qualtrics survey with 25 questions, this study investigated the preparedness and confidence of SLPs and SLP graduate students. Participants included certified SLPs and graduate students working with school-aged children. Data was collected anonymously, ensuring confidentiality. The survey addressed demographic information, training experiences, preparedness, and confidence levels, employing Likert scales for responses. The survey yielded responses from a diverse demographic, with participants representing various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Bilingual participants reported higher levels of preparedness and confidence compared to monolinguals, particularly in assessing bilingual children and working with non-English-speaking parents. However, challenges persist in achieving adequate representation of bilingual SLPs in the profession, underscoring the need for comprehensive training programs. The findings underscore the critical role of training and confidence in serving CLD populations among SLPs. Bilingual proficiency and cultural competence are essential for effective service delivery, highlighting the need for targeted efforts to increase awareness and participation in training programs among monolingual professionals. Limitations include a small sample size and reliance on self-reported data. This study sheds light on the importance of training and confidence in serving CLD populations among SLPs. While bilingual proficiency offers advantages, challenges remain in achieving adequate representation of bilingual professionals in the field. Future research should explore strategies to enhance training and promote cultural competence among SLPs nationwide.
