Abstract

The present study investigated the effect of age and past utilization of services on knowledge of counseling services and access barriers to those services. Participants consisted of 385 people from a rural sample, ranging in age from 18 to 97 years. Scales measuring knowledge and access, created by the researchers, were administered via mail-out survey. Age and past utilization each had a significant effect on knowledge of counseling (p < .001 and p = .012, respectively). Age was significant with transportation (p < .001), taking time off (p = .002), and knowing whom to call (p = .042) on the access barriers scale. Implications for counselors include seeking out alternative outreach programs to serve the needs of the elderly and future research on barriers to counseling service utilization by the elderly.
