Abstract
Athlete burnout is a cognitive-affective syndrome consisting of emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment, and sport devaluation components. Populations like collegiate athletes are susceptible to developing athlete burnout given the stresses and demands placed on them. Athlete burnout can have both psychophysiological and behavioral consequences. In order to prevent the development of athlete burnout in this population consistent and concise monitoring should be implemented to allow for early identification and management. At Goldey-Beacom College the mental health of the student-athlete population is not regularly assessed unless something is reported to the athletic training staff, or something is overheard or reported that warrants a referral to our on-campus mental health services. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) was administered on a weekly basis to the men’s soccer team. Data was collected on completion percentage and number of cases of athlete burnout identified. Results from this project showed a weekly completion percentage over eight weeks that ranged from 51.3% – 84.6%. Over the course of the eight weeks, one individual was identified as experiencing athlete burnout. In conclusion, the ABQ can be useful in improving the assessment for and identification of athlete burnout in a collegiate athlete population.
