Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics

Abstract

In the orthodontic treatment of patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), stabilization of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures should precede active orthodontic procedures to identify and maintain the true mandibular position. Mechanics to prevent TMJ structures from unbearable mechanical loads are also recommended for orthodontic treatment of patients with TMD. Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) can be an effective way to facilitate the orthodontic correction. Many studies have reported successful molar intrusion with orthodontic TADs to improve both occlusion and facial esthetics for severe anterior open bite patients. Intrusion of the posterior teeth produces similar effects on the profile as surgically assisted maxillary impaction, resulting in counterclockwise rotation of the mandible which leads to improvement in the position of the chin point. The chapter also presents two cases studies: skeletal Class II with TMD symptoms and lip protrusion with TMD symptoms.
