Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics

Abstract

Distalization of maxillary or mandibular arch dentitions is an efficient non-extraction treatment option, especially with the increasing number of patients looking to avoid extraction. Two sites have been identified for placement of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) into the buccal aspect of the maxilla: the interradicular spaces and the infrazygomatic region. Since the palate has sufficient bone quality and quantity to support TADs and has no anatomical structures that might be compromised during TAD placement, several authors have applied TADs into the interradicular spaces and the median region of the palate to support various tooth movement. Miniscrews installed into the interradicular spaces may interfere with the roots during distalization, and therefore the miniscrews might require relocation. In the maxillary arch, the placement of TADs into the median and paramedian palatal region might be more advantageous than placing them into the buccal region due to the limited range of action in case of interradicular application.
