Temporary Anchorage Devices in Clinical Orthodontics

Abstract

This chapter demonstrates the usefulness of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) as an anchorage aid in Tweed-Merrifield directional force technology. Four steps comprise Tweed-Merrifield sequential edgewise directional force treatment: denture preparation, denture correction, denture completion, and denture recovery. During preparation, maxillary and mandibular posterior TADs are installed and elastomers are applied for maximum retraction of canines and anchorage preparation of the terminal molars. During correction, maxillary anterior TADs and elastomers from the TADs to the soldered hooks or main archwire between the maxillary centrals and laterals are used for control of vertical dimension and torque of the maxillary anterior segment. In denture completion, idealization and finishing of the case are done with elastics attached to cusp seating spurs soldered to archwires with the proper first-, second-, and third-order bends. After the completion stage, there should be Tweed occlusion, anchorage-prepared positioning of the mandibular posterior teeth, and a gentle curve of Spee in the maxillary arch.
