Abstract
Temporomandibular disorder, a degenerative musculoskeletal condition associated with morphological and functional deformi-ties,1,2 includes abnormalities of the intra-articular disc position and structure as well as dysfunction of the associated musculature.3 Signs and symptoms include joint sounds, restricted jaw motion, and cranial and/or muscul ar pai n, usual l y known as orofacial pain.4,5 A malpo-sitioned disc is present in as many as 70% of TMD patients,6 owing to degenerative conditions of the con-dyle such as abrasion of articular cartilage and remodeling of under-lying bone.1 Degenerative changes may result from either reduced adaptability of the ar ticulating structures or excessive physical stress on these structures.3,7,8.
